About the “Agriculture Innovation Project” (AIP)

The Agricultural Innovation Project (AIP) aims to increase the income of small-scale agriculture in Upper Egypt through the usage of agricultural innovation.

The approach of value chain facilitation will be used, consequently applied from the market perspective. Farmers’ organisations will be supported by the project through technological innovation, consolidation of marketing abilities and the diversification of sales channels. Opportunities in both the growing domestic, as well as export markets will be explored, with a focus on high-value markets Value chains in the medical and aromatic plants (MAP) and horticulture sectors will be fostered.

The project will be implemented in three fields of activities: (i) Strengthen & diversify market access & market linkages for small holder farmers (ii) Strengthening institutional support and developing farmer organizations, and (iii) Igniting innovation for productivity and sustainability.

A. Responsibilities

The Junior Advisor is responsible for supporting tasks that foster the achievement of the objectives of strengthening and diversifying market access & market linkages for small holder farmers, and promoting microenterprise development

 

The Junior Advisor is responsible for:

  • assisting in the promotion of market linkages and agribusiness development, in close coordination with the private sector
  • supporting the facilitation of the policy dialogue with political partners and stakeholders through roundtables and other policy dialogue tools
  • assisting in the facilitation and following up on forward contracts between small holder farmers and the private sector
  • supporting the team members in promoting innovation and agri-business knowledge
  • contributing to the overall planning of the component’s activities, including the operational plan and monitoring and evaluation (M&E)

 

The Junior Advisor performs the following tasks:

B. Tasks

1. Professional advisory services

The Junior Advisor

  • supports in monitoring the development and implementation of the component plans and activities in close consultation with partners, specifically with regards to agribusiness development, market linkages and policy dialogue
  • ensures alignment of plans, implementation of activities and utilization of resources with service providers to maximize efficiency and harmony and to achieve market linkages related results        
  • ensures the project’s alignment with the strategy of the overall “Cluster for Sustainable Economic Development for Employment” and the “Private Sector Development Programme”
  • assists in the assessment and selection of the service providers
  • supports in identifying and reaching out to relevant private sector players in the market
  • supports in implementing new intervention formats with partners
  • assists with general project planning, including preparation, organisation and moderation of planning exercises and their implementation, management, monitoring, quality management, evaluation, communication and documentation
  • supports in the preparation and implementation of trainings, workshops, seminars and other events on issues in the fields of market linkages, agribusiness development and policy dialogue

 

2. Coordination tasks

The Junior Advisor

  • supports project management on behalf of GIZ in offers preparation, impact monitoring, project progress review and reporting

 

3. Research and knowledge management

The Junior Advisor

  • conducts research tasks when needed and collects information that supports the progress of the activity field
  • assists with research activities and studies on political issues which benefit joint projects
  • assists in developing ready-to-use strategies and technical concepts, including guidelines, manuals and procedures in the field of entrepreneurship and start-up support
  • supports in drafting Terms of References (ToR) of requests experts
  • draws up reports and presentation documents
  • prepares appropriate input for various project reports, including annual reports
  • compiles the relevant information for joint activities and assignments

 

4. Networking and cooperation

The Junior Advisor

  • supports cooperation, regular contact and dialogue with implementation partners and cooperates with local communities, relevant organisations, non-governmental agencies and individuals in the project environment and with other projects to improve and maintain good working relationships
  • assists in maintaining regular and consistent communication with implementation partners and direct beneficiaries and proposes technical adjustments or changes when needed
  • develops good working relationships with other GIZ projects/programmes and relevant development partner projects, to improve effectiveness and build synergies
  • assists and coordinates the communication tools for the activity work packages
  • supports in identifying and mobilizing formal buyers of the targeted agricultural commodities to build long-term business partnerships with farmers
  • communicates local interests and efforts, forwards these and encourages sharing ideas and information for the benefit of the project

5. Other duties/additional tasks

  • performs other duties and tasks requested by the management


C. Required qualifications, competences and experience

Qualifications

  • University degree (preferably M.A. /M.Sc. degree) in economics, social or political sciences, business administration or other relevant discipline.

 

Professional experience

  • 1 - 3 years of total professional experience in a comparable position.
  • Initial experience in the field of market linkages, and entrepreneurship programs.
  • Business networking with stakeholders in the agricultural/agribusiness sectors will be an asset.

 

Other knowledge, additional competences

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to deal with various partners involving government, private sector and civil society organizations.
  • Strong analytical and coordination skills, as evidenced by leading roles in successful initiatives engagements in agricultural commodities marketing and entrepreneurship training.
  • Ability and flexibility to travel across the country including Upper Egypt.
  • Ability to work in dynamic and complex working environments.
  • Very good working knowledge of ICT technologies (related software, phone, fax, email, the internet) and computer applications (e.g.MS Office).
  • Fluent written and oral command of English and Arabic.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Ability to write and translate reports.
  • Willingness to up-skill as required by the tasks to be performed.
  • Results orientation and accountability.
